Bag of Tricks 2
Disk Recovery Utility
by Dick Marchiafava
JNote: This item is reproduced from an item published in Mini'app'les, the /
newsletter of the Minnesota Apple User Group.
NAt a recent AppleWorks SIG meeting, the subject of recovering data after disk ,
crashes was discussed with great interest.
MI have Lifesaver, a disk recovery utility, which I have used successfully to N
Lrecover data from faulty disks, in the past. However, it does not work with
ProDOS files.
GBag of Tricks 2 was included in a roundup of disk recovery and utility J
Hprograms in a computer magazine. Because it works with DOS 3.3, ProDOS, P
NPascal, CP/M files and has an automatic recovery mode, I felt Bag of Tricks 2 9
was the "pick of the litter" of the utilities reviewed.
MI purchased Bag of Tricks 2. It contains 4 utility programs, TRAX, INIT, ZAP M
Kand FIXCAT. The manual included is thorough if somewhat technical. A brief M
Ksection about how to use the "automatic" modes would be most welcome by us
non-programming types.
HUsing FIXCAT, I was able to recover an AppleWorks disk that was totally O
Munreadable (probably the victim of the ProDOS bug) and 2 individual files on J
separate disks. In so far as I can tell, the recoveries were successful.
LThis recovery utility appears to be very good, based on my first experience
with it.
MBag of Tricks 2, from Quality Software lists at $49.95 plus shipping. It may *
be available from dealers at a discount.
